5 Seconds of Summer
5 Seconds of Summer is an Australian pop-rock band that got their start in 2010. This band of young men started when they were just young teens in high school. They would record covers of songs by various artists and would later upload them to the popular video sharing platform known as YouTube.
The band gained a bigger following when a member of the popular boy band One Direction tweeted about them. The young men were then invited to go on tour with One Direction as their opening act. They decided to say yes, as it would show people how different they were from boy bands like One Direction.
5 Seconds of Summer consists of four members. Ashton Irwin, who is the drummer and backing vocalist. Calum Hood, who is the bassist and a vocalist. Michael Clifford, who is the lead guitarist and a vocalist. The last member is Luke Hemmings, who is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.
When the band started it was just Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, and Calum Hood. Michael came up with a name for the band since they couldn’t figure one out and they eventually landed themselves their first gig. Ashton was brought into the band when realized they needed a drummer for their upcoming gig. Michael messaged Ashton on Facebook one day and asked him if he would be interested in playing with them. When Ashton agreed to join them, they played a small show in a local pub.
5 Seconds of Summer has released five studio albums during their journey so far. Their self titled debut album, 5 Seconds of Summer, was released in 2014. One particular song off of this album was what started their groundbreaking success. She Looks So Perfect was the name of the song that really created a massive following for the band. This song was even featured on one of the Just Dance games that was released in the same year.
The band’s second album was titled Sounds Good Feels Good. The third album was titled Youngblood and had songs that topped the charts, much like their past albums. Album number four was titled Calm and was released during the unfortunate Covid pandemic.
Last but certainly not least, 5SOS5. This album was really special for the band because they went on a trip together and just wrote a bunch of songs. They spent a lot of time together writing these songs and even let the fans pick the name for this album. This band is special for so many people and they are doing absolutely amazing things! Here’s to many more years of 5 Seconds of Summer!
